Jigsaw Piece

The charm of the old property in fairytale surroundings so enchanted our client that she purchased it though she did not, in fact, want to live in an old house any longer. Research to clarify permissions established that a small new build accommodating her requirements could be constructed on the edge of the parcel.

The new house in the established hamlet is placed so that it continues the sequence of the interstitial spaces with their courtyard ambiance. With its singular formal language it blends into the neighbourhood with the stately villa and small park and the erstwhile baliff’s accommodation. Lenzburg Castle is majestically enthroned on the hill above the group of houses surrounded by meadows.

The house is tailored for a couple. The central space is a two-storey dining room which lends the small building generous spaciousness. Façade and roof are clad in sheet copper and make the building volume one, unified object. The copper’s ageing process will give the house a beautiful patina. The small, modern house blends confidently into its dignified neighbourhood.
